| Note* | | From 'Some Bakers' - John was in Washington County, Maryland, and Washington County, Pennsylvania before going to West Virginia. Carla Baker McHenry - Around 1777, John as well as Morris, Zebediah and Meshak signed an Oath of Allegiance in Washington County Maryland, but no service record has been found yet (This as well as the following info came from a researcher named Flo Montgomery who researched the Tyler County Baker's quite extensively. Unfortunately, she was long since passed away; however, I have found a lady who corresponded with Flo in the 1970s. This ladies name is Joreen Vincent.) By 1781 John is found in the Washington County, PA area. He was taxed in Hopewell Township on 50 acres of land. The 1790 Hopewell Census lists John Baker as 1-1-1. (I'm not quite sure what that means. Does it mean 1 male, 1 female and 1 child?????) If this interpretation is correct, then this is probably John Dorsey, wife Catherine, and son Meshack. As for John's father and grandfather they all came toward western Virginia but it seems they may have migrated at different times. John's father Morris was still in Maryland for the 1790 Census there, but was called 'of Washington County, PA in a deed recorded in Brooke County, (W)Va in 1796. John's grandfather Zebediah Baker had gone to Washington County, PA by 1785 and then was on Buffalo Creek near his Aunt Sarah Wells. (Not real sure where Buffalo Creek is. It is probably in Washington County, PA, Brooke County, WV or Tyler County, WV) In 1790 in Hopewell John Baker and wife Catherine sold 29 € acres of land. In 1796 John and Catherine are found in Brooke County where they deeded land to Snodgrass In 1800 Brooke County John's father Morris is called Sr. And Taxed 1 tithe and 2 horses. So somewhere between 1800 and 1810 John and his father Morris moved to Ohio County (the part now considered Tyler County). Pennsylvania in 1789/90 (son John was born in PA), moved to Tyler County by 1810. Shows up in the 1810 Tyler County Census along with his father Morris in John's household. 1787 Personal Property Tax List in Ohio County, (W)VA (This and the following Tax List info came from XXXXX) Meshack Baker - four horses and seven cattle. John Baker - 2 males 16-21 (?Evan and Meshack Baker); 2 horses and seven cattle. Henry Baker - two horses and one cow. March 1, 1834 - Heirs of Morris Baker, Charles Baker of Coshocton County, Ohio and Ruth Wells of Hopewell Twp, Pennsylvania deed to John Baker 128 acres 'located on' Middle Island Creek below the mouth of Indian Creek. ------------------ (According to Flo Mongomery - research compiled by Jeanne Turley) 1810 Ohio County (W)VA (Tyler County) Census Baker, John Dorsey - 2 males and 1 females born by 1765 (probably John, Catherine and John's father Morris), 1 males born between 1784-1794 (son John Baker), 1 male born between 1794-1800 (son Rezin Baker), 1f 1800-1810 - (???? This could be Cassandra) (Son Meshak and daughter Nancy were married by 1810) ---------------------- 1820 Tyler County (W)VA Census Baker, John Dorsey - 1 male and 1 female born by 1775 (John Dorsey Baker and wife Catherine), 1 female born between 1795-1804 (? unknown daughter possibly named Cassandra according to researchers Doris and Rebecca Jones of White House, TN), and 1 female born between 1810-1820 (? grandaugther). ----------------------- 1830 Tyler County (W)VA Census Baker, John Dorsey - 1 male and 1 female born between 1750-1760 aged 70-80. ------------------------ 1840 Tyler County (W)VA Census Baker, Meshack John and Catherine are found in their son Meshack's household as 80-90 1m & 1f.4 |
