| Note* | | They migrated to Gallia County, Ohio Oct 17, 1811 with the families ofElizabeth's sisters Sally (Denney) Stone, Nancy (Denney) Stone and Polly(Denney) Hill. Apparently at the same time as their brothers William,James, Harrel and Henry Denney. There are numerous descendants of this family in Gallia County, Ohio &Jay County, IN. Elizabeth is buried at Gallia County, Ohio (Fairview Cemetery), alongwith her husband William. ODD: Along with William and Elizabeth in Fairview Cemetery, there isanother tombstone marked 'Clarinda, wife of William, d. May 8, 1850 23y2m 15d. He married Elizabeth in 1801 and she died in 1869, were theydivorced, I think not or she would not be buried with him. This isprobably another of those stories we'll always guess about. UPDATE: Asmore data becomes available, we now know that William Bray Jr. marriedClarinda Barton and she died 1850, thus she is their daughter-in-law. Elizabeth's son William married a Sallie Denney and daughter Nancymarried Ransom Denney. This is going to be very confusing for thecomputer and I may in fact have to detach one of them so reports are notconfusing also. The 1850 Gallia County, Ohio Census finds the family as William age 73 afarmer with $3000 of real estate, wife Elizabeth age 67, son William Jr.and William Jr.'s son Wilson age 10 months. Evidently after the death ofWilliam Jr.'s wife Clarinda, he and Wilson went to live with William Sr.Thee was also a Cordelea Hays age 16 living with them, uncertain as toher status. Per William Denney, William Bray was shown to be 83 years of age in theGallia County, Ohio 1860 census (p.28 Springfield Township). He is shownas 83 years of age born NC and wife Elizabeth is age 77 born NC. William was a farmer and a Baptist. He came to Gallipolis, Ohio onOctober 17, 1811 (contradicts with 1814 above!) and a year later wasdrafted into the War of 1812. While in the Army, he was taken with campfever and nearly lost his life. He was taken home in 1813 where herecovered from his sickness. He bought and cleared a large farm inSpringfield Township. William joined the Springfield Missionary Baptist Church in 1850. Elizabeth and William were living in the Springfield Township of GalliaCounty, Ohio during the 1860 census and were living next door to his sonWilliam Jr. and Sarah (Denney) Bray. Per William Denney, the Gallia County, Ohio Deed Book V. 31, p. 231 liststhe children of William and Elizabeth Bray. The majority of my data on ancestors of William Bray is from WilliamDenney who in turn obtained it from Hazel Rea and Mary Vanegas around1995.2 |
