| Note* | | He/She would be one of the children of Samuel Denny/Sarah Suddarth(Southard) of Surry County, NC. The known siblings of this person thathad families and of which I have prepared GEDCOMS at various Web Sitesare Azariah Denny/Sally Wise Felton, William Denny/Rebecca Hooper, JohnDenny/Elizabeth UNK, Charles Denny/Anna Larwood, James Denny/EstherSmall, Elizabeth Denny/Priddy Meeks, Keziah Denney/John Robinson. AZARIAH Was known AKA 'IZZY' as were many of the Azariah's in the Denny lines. Per Sylvester Denneys Book, this couple only had 12 Children. Azariah fought in the Revolutionary War. Settled with his wife on a land grant in 1784 on Pilot Creek, whichbecame known as the Martin Flinchum Farm . This was about three mileswest of of the town of Pilot Mountain and a couple of miles up the creekfrom the Hill Farm where his father had lived. The official record is:Nov 3, 1784 NC grant to Azariah Denny 150 acres on Pilot Creek (pages25-26 of Surry County, NC Deed Book C.) He lived, died and was buried onthis farm. A tomb stone carved out of field stone marks his restingplace. His wife is also buried there with a field stone marker. Supposedly lived to well over 90 years of age.HISTORICAL DATA Azariah Denny Book C, Page 25 Surry County, NC November, 1784, 150 acresfrom the state of North Carolina in Surry County on Pilot Creek. Listed on the Surry County Tax List for 1771 (spelled ASCRYER) and alsofor 1772 (spelled ASERY). Surry County Tax List (Captain Lovell) for 1784,1785,1786 & 1789: 150Acres, 1 White Poll, 0 Black Polls. November, 1788, Surry County Court Term: Azeriah Denny appointed as juror. Surry County Court Minute Pleas & Qtr. Session, Feb 1791: Henry Southard& Azeriah Denny appointed to jury for next session. (Note the name SOUTHARD, this would be his mothersmaiden name and may be a good indicator that Southard people did indeedlive here and be somewhat proof that Samuel did marry a Southard anddispel the notion that he may have married a Sudderth). Azeriah Denny,John Stone, Enoch Stone and others to lay out road from Haynes Iron Workson Thoms Creek to Rockford (Note the Stones here, there were numerousDenny / Stone marriages in Surry County). Surry County, 9 November 1795, Azeriah Denny on Grand Jury. Azariah purchased 107 acres for 50 pounds on the waters of Pilot Creekfrom a Joshua Sumner on 2 Jan 1796. Azariah appeared on the 1819 Surry County Tax List with 357 acres of landassessed at $900. He was living next to Jacob Fulk and John Fletcher onPilot Creek. This is just a sampling of data that Denney/Denny Genealogists haveuncovered so far on this man.ADDITIONAL DATA ON CHILDREN Joshua moved to SC. Asenith moved to SC. Polly and Jesse Hill moved to Gallia County, Ohio along with the familiesof her three sisters, Sally (Denney) Stone, Nancy (Denney) Stone, andElizabeth (Denney) Bray. They apparently went at the same time asWilliam, James, Harrel and Henry Denney. Rachel and John Fletcher moved to TN?. There is a colony of Denneys inElizabethtown, TN, just across the border from NC which is reason tosuspect that John Fletcher followed some of the Denneys to TN. Joel Denney did not show a Louis Denny as a member of this family so hemay not belong here. HISWIFE SALLY Last name not certain, could be Fulton per William Denney of Vancouver,WA. If I were a betting person, I would say the last name was Felton asthis plus the fact of her mothers last name being 'HARRELL' fits in withuse of the name in later generations such as my great grandfather 'HarrelFelton Denney'. Joel Denny's letter also said the name was Fulton, we shall leave it asFelton until proved out. William Denney thinks it is impossible to beFelton as her father Richard Felton was never around Surry County and wasfrom the Chowan and Hertford Counties in eastern NC. Per an internet message from William Denney of Vancouver, WA on Feb 15,1998, he appears to have proof showing that the father of Sally WiseFelton CAN NOT be Richard Felton and in fact has to be one Job Felton ofOglethorpe, GA. He cites Job's will which names Sarah Denne as a daughterand papers in Job's estate files which shows a receipt signed by AzariahDenny for $10 received as paid in full for Job's daughter, Sally Denny'slegacy. This Job Felton did have children Harrel Felton and WilliamFelton which could explain the use of these names in later generations. The one point that bothers me is GEORGIA, William does not explain theconnection of how the Georgia people and North Carolina Dennys cameabout. I will leave this all up to experts to figure out and keep RichardFelton for now as her father and leave this info here for anyone wantingto explore it further. DEC 1999: I have some papers from Ima Gene(GUTHERY) Boyd that may further confuse the issue or then again, may showadditional proof of one chain of thought. She provided me an abstractthat shows Job Felton's will was recorded in P. 63, Book B, Oglethorpe,GA Wills. I do not see any Sarah Denne there but there is a SALLY DUNNwhich could have been Sarah SALLY Denne depending on the personsinterpretation of the writing. What really caught my attention is that inhis will the names Phyllis Gentry, Ruth Rainwater, daughters of JobFelton. Asenith Denny, daughter of Azariah Denny/Sally Felton married aElisha Gentry in 1811, their son Azariah Denny Gentry married MarthaRainwater. Ima Gene Boyd descends from this line thus this shows that ourpeople were definitely involved with the Georgia Feltons thus WillianDenneys theory may be correct as to the parents of Sally Felton,Azariah's wife. Sally Felton shows up throughout family folk lore as a great woman of hertime and the name Felton is passed on down through the generations.Because of the prominence of Sally Felton in the genealogy of this branchof the Denney family, the Felton genealogy was partially explored & itwas found that the influence of this woman can be explained as thegenealogy of her line bears out her wonderful character. A Mr. Felton,President of the Felton Seed Company of Sioux City, Iowa has a genealogyof the Felton family. Richard Felton III, Sally's father, was an ancestorof all the North Carolina & George Feltons.2 |
