Charles was probably born in Albermarle County, VA in an area that isnow Nelson County, VA. He went to Rowan County (present day Surry County,NC) NC about 1769 with his father Samuel Denny. Charles settled on what is known as the A.M. Denny Farm, ( Not Azariah M.Denny), on the Ararat River. Early in the 1780's, Charles moved to Montgomery County, VA to an areathat is now Grayson County, VA. In late 1800 or early 1801 he sold out &went to Wayne County, Kentucky taking his sons Benjamin and Charlesalong. Many of the Kentucky Dennys have descended from these people. His estimated date of death based upon a statement from Jodie Huffakerthat there was a 'settlement' in November 1834 concerning Charles,probably settling his estate. His wife Anna is buried at Finley Creek, Webster County, KY (DenneyCemetery). Jeannie Dobbs in Rootsweb World Connect Report 'jdobbs' has his DOB as1766 HISTORICAL DATA ONCHARLES 15 Aug 1778 Surry County, NC; 'Charles Denny enters 150 acres of land inSurry County, NC on both sides of Tararat River at the mouth of PilotCreek including the improvement whereon he now lives'. Estimated Birth Date comes from the fact that the 1830 Wayne County, KYcensus where he was listed as being between 60-70 years of age. Charles appeared on the 1787 Montgomery County, VA tax list with 0blacks, 3 horses and 9 cattle. From the 1790 tax lists of Montgomery County, VA, Feb 25 Charles Dennypaid tax for himself and three horses. He was in the area of a 'Dividingridge between Cripple & Reed Creeks, Elk Creek'. 1794- Charles appears on a Grayson County, VA tax list (the year theCounty was formed). 20 May 1794 Grayson County, VA; 'Ordered that Charles Denny be appointedsurveyor of the road from Meadow Creek to where a path crosses the roadleading from William Wrights to James Wright. Divide between said roadCharles Denny and Andrew Hampton the hands to work upon same. October 13, 1799- Charles Denny (of the State of Virginia) sold his landgrant in Surry County, NC to William Hill, but apparently was not livingon it from about 1795 on, per the above records. His wife did not signthe deed, but then she was not required to under NC law. (Perhaps sheremained in Grayson County, VA during this sale). The deed was witnessedby Azariah Denny and Sarah Hill. 1802 Wayne County, KY: Chas Denny acquires 200 acres via land grant. AChas Denny appears on the 1802 Wayne County, KY tax list. 1806 Wayne County, KY: Charles Denny posts a bond in relation to amarriage between Sally Denny and David Duncan. 1810 Wayne County, KY census contains Charles Denney: 1 male to 10; 2males 16-26; 1 male 45+; 1 female 10-16; 3 females 16-26; and 1 female45+. The 1810 tax list shows 250 acres and 1 male over 21. 1820 Wayne County, KY census contains Charles Denney: 1 male 10-16; 1male 45+; 1 female 16-26; 1 female 45+. Per Jodie Huffaker, the 16-26female was a ward (Elizabeth Maxwell). Per R. J. Denney, Charles Denneysigned the consent for Elizabeth Maxwell to marry in 1825. 1830 Wayne County, KY census contains Charles Denney: 1 male 60-70; 1female 40-50; and 1 female 70-80. ADDITIONAL DATAABOUT CHILDREN Death date for Sarah was estimated based upon the fact that she did notappear in the 1860 census. Agnes Denny, per Mary E. Denney she and her husband left for partsunknown around 1825. They supposedly had two sons and a daughter. She wasdismissed from the Concord Baptist Church in 1825.
