| Note* | | Per Joyce Holt Taylor, Sarah and Francis moved to the Mountain Grove, MOarea The 1860 Wright County, MO census shows Sarah enumerated with her sonStephen Holt, some Allcorn children (Ursula's children) were alsoenumerated with Stephen. Francis was not in this census thus he may havebeen dead or separated from Sarah This written by John Hull (Sent To Me By Joyce Holt Taylor) My mother's family were pioneers of the Ozark section. My greatgrandfather settled on the mountain in what is now Mountain Grove in 1840. That was Francis Holt, and mother's father settled on the adjoining farm about the same time as mother was said to be the first white child born on the mountain, in 1845. Both farms are now within the city limits of Mountain Grove. Francis Holt was active in promoting the Mountain Grove Academy in 1857,gave 5 acres of land for its location and laid out the town around it. The academy was established by Simeon Philips who came from some where in the east to the end of the railroad at Rolla and from there on an ox lumber wagon. He was a public spirited educator and musician and built up agood school that drew students from all south Missouri and north Arkansasuntil he was forced to abandon it during the civil war. It was a large two story frame building, rather pretentious for the time, and built of materialand labor, contributed by the people of the community. So far as I have been able to learn, it was the first academy built in south Missouri and had a high cultural influence over the entire section. My father and mother attended the school and my great uncle, Steve Holt dressed the stone forthe foundation of the building and built the first blacksmith shop andcarding machine in the town. Grandfather, John H. Holt, was shot from ambush by bush whackers while working on the farm in 1862. Then they burned their house, stole their horses and run off their stock, so grandmother sold the last pair ofmules to the Government Post and bought two yoke of cattle, too poor for beef, and moved the family to Arkansas, there they found they were cut off from supplies and they went up the river to Pike county. The 160 acre farmwas sold to pay a note of $100 to the county and the Francis Holt farm wassold to cover expenses. $13.00 was left and it has never been claimed.2 |
