There was a prospect of a railroad being built in Wright County, MN in1866 and that probably precipitated William's move to that area in 1866.The spring of 1867 was a very wet one and because the large number of newsettlers had not had time to plant crops the year before, it led to asevere famine. At least 150 people in Middleville Township (where Williamsettled) applied for temporary relief, since they had no food and werestarving. William and his family were living in the Middleville Township of WrightCounty, MN on August 27, 1870, p. 8, household #63. An Alexander Corwin, age 35, and born in Ohio was living next door. The value of the livestock was $250 and he had 40 bushels ofIndian corn. Note that the Middleville Township of Wright County, MN was settled in1856 and organized in 1858. It was named by Morgan V. Cochran 'from hisold home in Virginia'. Morgan was the brother of William Denney'sdaughter Allie's husband, James Z, Cochran. James and Morgan's father,Aaron Cochran was the person who discovered the Dustin family after theirmassacre by Indians in 1863. On January 5, 1872, William Denney filed for 80 acres of land in the N1/2 of SE 1/4 of Section 4, Township 119, Range 27 of the MiddlevilleTownship, and paid $4 for it to complete the Homestead fee on 11 March,1872. He mortgaged this 80 acres of land to Bartholomew Wister for $300on 6 April, 1872 and paid it off on 29 May, 1875. He sold the east halfof this property (40 acres) to his son-in-law, James H. Hoover for $550on 29 May, 1875. He sold the west half of this property (40 acres) toJames DeWees on 16 January, 1877 for $325. William sold this parcelof land to John and Mary J. Robinson on 14 February, 1881 for $750. He served with the 24th Indiana Light Artillery during the Civil War.
