Much of the data herein on Luther Modlin/Deliliah Denney was provided toBill Denney by Warrene Orgeron. They were Quakers, references to MM herein refer to their Quaker MonthlyMeetings. The Springfield, Wayne County, IN MM had her husbands last name asMAUDLIN. The name appears as Maudlin and Modlin in various places, perWarrene, the Maudlins/Modlins are first found in Perquimans County, NC. Deliliah was received into the Springfield, Wayne County, IN MM per herrequest on July 20, 1850. Per the History of Henry County Indiana 1884, p. 509, her husband Lutherlived in Cadiz, Henry County, IN and ran a lumber yard. In 1880, he waselected Treasurer of Henry County and served two years. In the spring of1881, he moved his family to New Castle. In 1882, he returned to farmingand in 1883, he traveled to Maine and bought a herd of Jersey cattlewhich he had shipped to his farm in Harrison Township. This historyindicates that they were then members of the Methodist Episcopal Church.The Warrene referenced above believes that by this time they had left theFriends (Quaker) Church disillusioned by the church's stand on slavery.Luther and his parents were both involved in the anti-slavery movementand Luther was sanctioned several times for attending meetings againstslavery. Luther's mother, Jane Wright, an earl settler to Henry County, along withher father Jesse Wright, helped run a station for the underground.
