Notes from Lee Rose: 'Based on birth dates of some of John's children, itis possible he was previously married. A researcher of an earliergeneration, Babe Fowler, stated 'have been told by several family membersthat Esther and Sarah are full sisters to the other children even thoughthe marriage record of John and Rebecca is after their date of BirthPossibly John and Rebecca were married by father and license obtainedlater when they were able to get to a court house.' John and Rebecca lived on the Kentucky side of Tug River, opposite ofwhat was later Borderland. John was the first coal operator of PikeCounty. Before the railroad was constructed in 1894, he built heavywooden boats into which he loaded coal and floated the boats down riverto market at Catlettsburg, Kentucky.2
