Joseph died Feb 1774 in Berkeley Co., WV, at age 63. Joseph may have come from Lancaster Co., PA, as there are Rippeys there very early. It is thought they were Ulster Scots because they were Presbyterian; had they been Irish, their religious faith probably would have been Catholic. Joseph's son, Mathew was one of the first Elders in the Cool Springs Presbyterian Church in 1764.(1770) Joseph Rippey made his will on 2 Nov 1771 in Frederick Co., VA, which became Berkeley Co., WV in 1772. It was proved 15 Mar 1774, executors being Samuel Parkes and John Snodgrass, Joseph's sons-in-law. In the will, he left 1/2 the land to his son, Mathew, and the other half to his wife Ellen for her lifetime; after which it was to go to Mathew. Joseph left all his moveables and debts to be equally divided between his wife and all his sons-in-law. His son-in-law, Samuel Parkes was to have (at the price of seventy pounds to be taken out of his legacy) first refusal of the slave, Tom, who Joseph didn't want to go to a stranger. If Samuel refused the offer, second choice was to go to John Snodgrass. At the time he made his will, Joseph was of the parish of Norbourn. (1771) One of the Rippy cabins still stood and was photographed by another descendant, Onda Booker of Indiana, in the summer of 1993. Joseph Rippey(Rippy) and Ellen (mnu) Rippey had the following children: 2 i. Mathew2 Rippey. 3 ii. Ellen Rippey was born about 1736. Sources: 1770. Chaffin, Wm. L, Robt.
