| Note | "Captain McDonald was a soldier and spy under General Wayne, in 1794 . He was a brother-in-law of General Duncan McArthur, a justice of the peace, and at one time a member of the Ohio Legislature." Note from http://www.ushistory.org/valleyforge/served/wayne.html:"In later years, General Wayne was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the United States Army by President Washington to subdue the Indians in the northwest territory. Wayne began at once to reorganize the army. In May 1793, he established his camp at Fort Washington (near the present location of Cincinnati.) He established a camp, Greeneville, in honor of his friend, Nathanael Greene, and another fort, Fort Recovery. After fighting for some time, the Indians in August, 1795, concluded a treaty at Greeneville. Wayne returned home after a three year absence for a short time. He was given a unusual welcome in Philadelphia and his native Chester County. He returned west to conclude some national business, where he died at Fort Presque Isle in 1796. In 1809, his son, Colonel Isaac Wayne, removed his remains and with appropriate ceremonies, they were reinterred at St. David's Church in Radnor, Pennsylvania." If McDonald was a spy in 1794 then it would likely have been in Ohio. From http://www.famousamericans.net/duncanmcarthur/: "McARTHUR, Duncan, soldier, born in Dutchess county, New York, 14 June, 1772; died near Chillicothe, Ohio, 28 April, 1839. His family removed to the western frontier of Pennsylvania when he was eight years old, and at the age of eighteen he volunteered in General Josiah Harmar's expedition against the Miami Indians. He participated as a ranger or scout in the warfare with the Indians of Kentucky and Ohio until General Anthony Wayne's victory over them in 1794. Soon afterward he settled as a surveyor near Chillicothe, and acquired large wealth in land. He was a member of the Ohio legislature in 1805, and in 1808 became major-general of the territorial militia."4 | |

| Document - Private | 27 February 1809 | McArthur Letter Letter from Thomas J. McArthur to Aunt Henriatta McDonald dated 27 Feb. 1809. Thomas J. McDonald, a nephew of Thomas McDonald, son of his sister Nancy, born April 5, 1802 would have been six - almost seven - when the letter was written. It is written in a nice hand that would most likely have been written by an adult. The letter states: "Uncle Thomas thinks this letter will do for him and me both his family is all well and Desires to be Remembered to you and cousin Sally he would have wrote a seperate letter but did not know what to write." This context, the age of his nephew, and the statement of his brother saying he had a fine hand, would indicate that he wrote the letter on behalf of his nephew.7 |
