The deceased was born Sept. 18, 1844, near Salem, Ill. At the age of eighteen years, he united with the Methodist church, of which he was a faithful member until death. On May 14, 1882 he was married to Georgia Mayes. To this union eight children were born, five of whom, with his gentle wife, eight grandchildren, four brothers and three sisters still survive him. The surviving children are: Mrs. Lucy New of Dexter, Mo., Mrs. Martha Booher of Cedar Vale, Dolly Carter, Cedar Vale, Mrs. Minnie Jones, Independence and Hazel Heistand still at home. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Niell of Dexter, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Patten cemetery. 'Peaceful be thy silent slumber, Peaceful in the grave so low; Thou no more shalt join our number, Thou no more our tears shalt know.' 'Yet again we hope to meet thee, When the cares of life have fled; Then in Heaven with joy to greet thee, Where no farewell tear is shed.' The above was clipped from a Hooser, Kansas paper. Mr. Benj. Heistand was a member of one of the leading families in Alma township. He was the son of Solomon and Martha Heistand. His brothers, Samuel H., Abraham, Geo. W. and Chas. Heistand are among the prosperous farmers of their vicinity. The sisters are Mrs. Margaret Armstrong of Tuckerman, Ark., Mrs. Amanda Griffin and Mrs. Alice Immel living near Brubaker.
