| Document* | Record of a George Jordan being taken care of Willis Mays. Is this George Jordan noted in Cabell Co. VA Overseers of the Poor, our George? | |
| Name Variation | George W. Mays | |
| Note* | Based on Margie Jones notes, both George and Roxey were full blood Choctaw Indians. If true, there children would all be full blooded Choctaw Indians. My grandfather Jones several years ago was contacted by cousins (I believe Margie Jones for one) that informed him that his Grandmother, Georgia (nee Mays) Heistand was 1/2 indian through George Mays her father. Though grandfather Jones never heard that from his mother, he did remember her looking Indian when her hair was undone. The cousins thought that George Mays was either Cocktaw or Cherokee. Through my personal discussion with the cousins, their source of George Mays being Indian comes from a comment from their father Earl Mays (grandson of George Mays). He once indicated in a moment of anger surrounding changing a flat tire that he was full blooded indian. Earl indeed had other ancestors who were documented native americans. However, since learning that George Mays was likely born in West Virginia near the Ohio border it seems less likely that George was an indian. It seems even more remote that he was Cherokee or Choctaw given their historic locations of these tribes. Given the prejudice of the times people rarely acknowledged indian blood which could explain why it was never mentioned, even if George Mays was native american. Several descendants of Franklin Mays joined the United Lumbee Nation. Franklin did marry a native ameriacn. Note United Lumbee Nation is not affiliated with the Lumbee Tribe. The United Lumbee Nation is Federally or State recognized. Choctaw History and maps., Principal=Roxey Jane Keaton, Witness=Georgia Emma Mays1 | |

B. (Annie Walker Burns) , FHL US/CAN Film 848627 Item 2 a Microreproduction of original typescript (90 p.) 1900 Census indicated that Roxie and James Forbs were married 46 year. Note that # of years married does not make sense since that would make this the wrong Roxie -see 1910 census- or him father of all children including Frank Mays. I think that the crossed out 50 was the # of years since he was first married and 46 the number of years from when she was first married. This would place marriage of George and Roxie at about 1854. ., Principal=Roxey Jane Keaton3,4 |
