| Note* | I must express my gratitude to Dale Larrew and Eddie Bales for their input on the Nathan Bales line, many people in this report and a numerous amount of the notes were provided by them. Delilah P. Cook Bales was born in Preble county, Ohio July 8, 1838 and died October 6, 1904, age 66 years 2 months and 29 days. With her parents she emigrated to Iowa in the spring of 1839. She lived near Salem, Henry county, Iowa until she was grown to womanhood. In the year 1857 she was married to Nathan Bales who lived a happy life together for over 47 years. To this union were born seven children, six sons and one daughter. Two of the sons preceded her to the Glory land at the age of nearly two years, Charley and Cliff. E. E. Bales and family were present with us, F. W. Bales lives in Indian Territory, D. W. Bales is now in San Francisco, Calif., H. M. Bales lived in Kansas City, Kansas and the daughter Julia E. Phiper lives near Atwood, Kansas. Circumstances were such that none except E. E. Bales was present at the funeral to comfort and console their father with whom we all sympathize in their bereavement. Mrs. Bales was reared in the Faith and Customs of the Friends church. After moving to Lake City, Iowa, no Friends church being at that place, she with her husband joined with the U. B's in Christ and remained a member until her death. As the end drew near the way seemed brighter and brighter. In her helplessness she would ofttimes try to sing of the Faraway Home of the Soul and My Heavenly Home is Bright and Fair. The two above mentioned songs sung at the funeral. She often expressed herself as ready to go at the Lord's call. Among her last words were 'Saved by the blood of the Lamb.' The funeral took place at the M. E. church at Plainville, October 8 at 10 O' clock A.M. conducted by Rev. L. W. Mickey Her husbands surname may be spelled BAILES or BEALS as seen in other reports such as the one posted at Rootsweb World Connect by Dorothy Burt 'bailes' Notes for Nathan Bales: According to Marie Zorb Bales (wife of Murl E. Bales, Grandson of Nathan) Nathan married twice after the death of his first wife Delilah. The second wife was Lizzie and she could not remember the name of the third wife. She did remember the third wife was from MO. Research by Ethel L. Bales of Riley, Kansas shows Nathan birth date as10-10-1838 1860 US Census, Salem twp., Henry co., Iowa 2023-1787 N. When a child his parents moved to Salem, Iowa, where he grew to manhood and in 1857 was united in marriage to Delilah P. Cook. To this happy couple were born six sons and one daughter, two of whom,, Charles and Cliff, died in infancy, leaving E. E. Bales, of Emporia, Kans., F. W.Bales of Grenola, Kans., H. M. Bales of Tulsa, Oklahoma, D. W. Bales of Salina Kans., and Mrs. J. H. Phifer of Fort Morgan, Colo., with whom he made his home the past three years. Beside these he leaves to mourn, his departure, two brothers, one sister, and number of grandchildren, greatgrandchildren and a host of friends. The wife have passed away in 1904, one of the sons, D. W. Bales, accompanied the remains to Plainville, Kans., where after a short service the body was carefully laid away beside that of the wife. Mr. Bales was reared in the faith and customs of the Friends church, but at Lake City, Iowa, he united with his wife to the U. B's in Christ and was a superintendent of that Sunday school for nine years. Upon moving to Grenola, Kans., he united with the Christian church and remained a member until his death. 'Grandpa Bales,' as he was familiarly known here, lived a consecrated, devoted life, giving much inspiration to those with whom he met, especially in his wonderful ability and love for singing those good old Christian songs. We do not wish him back but rejoice in his reward.3 | |
