| Note* | GEORGE WASHINGTON MILLSAPS HOUSE Geo. Wash, found a place a bit further north where people named Burrows and Bedford were living, in what became known as Chrome Valley, that suited him, and here he built a house. He built a house that had a stairway at the west end which led onto a covered "widow's walk,” an old seafarers custom - - the second story deck being the place where the sailors wives could be out of the weather to watch for their men to come sailing home. Of course, this one was a bit too far from the ocean for that, but must have been a wonderful place to watch the sunset. Jim Ellis (a brother of George Ellis) and Ida lived there after "Grandpap”, as they called Geo. Wash., died. They were followed by Louie Cooper until his death, when it was bought by William (Bill) Millsaps, who lived there with his wife Mary Burrows Millsaps, until his death. Mary-Bill who lived in this house for many years after Geo.Washes day, described this house as having a "dogtrot", which was a covered passage way built on the south side of it. What we would call a breezeway today, and the section to the south of the dogtrot had a dining room, storage room, and pantry. This section of the house was used as a summer kitchen to keep the heat from the woodburning range out of the living and sleeping space in the main house, There was a porch on both the east and west sides of the dining room and a pastry and flour room on the west side, Mary-Bill told me. Families were smaller now (Geo Wash. had 11 children 8 of which survived), so by the time I saw this house (around 1943 or 1944) the dogtrot and summer kitchen were torn down and the lumber probably used to build some needed shed. The house built by Geo.Wash. is opposite the entrance to Chrome Cemetery, and is now owned by Velma Gillaspy, and is slowly being consumed by the elements. Later, Joe Sr. built a similar house in his valley, but faced the widows walk the opposite direction.2 | |
