Commentary on the Baptism Records of Jone, Elizabeth and Benjamin Stroud
I believe this 6 May baptism record is our own Jone who later married Thomas Mildenhall in 1649 at Aldbourne parish. That means our Joane got married at about 18 years of age. This record actually appears to say “Jane,” but I consider this a clerical error because 1) there is no known “Jane” Stroud anywhere else in the Baydon records (the mention of “Jane” is mistaken in Thomas Stroud’s
1636 will as transcribed on the Internet, and should read, “Ann”), 2) “Jone” is a family name among the Strouds (before and after 1631), 3) the marriage record of 1649 clearly reveals a “Jone” Stroud
marrying Thomas Mildenhall, 4) the siblings of this “Jane” match the siblings of our Joane in her mother Margery’s 1678 will (Benjamin and Elizabeth), and 5) the gap in the handwriting between “a” and “n” in “Jane” is suspicious, because elsewhere in that same handwriting — a) the gap is almost never after the letter “a” (only 3 out of 34 times), and b) such a gap is usually found after the letter “o.” None of these facts alone make a convincing case, but when one puts all these facts together in this context, it is clear that this is our Jone Stroud.

The importance of these baptism records is that they 1) prove that Anthony Stroud was the father of our Joane and 2) confirm the link with Margery, as all three names — Jone, Elizabeth and Benjamin, are found among the children of Margery in her 1678 will. These two records are therefore referring to the same siblings – children of both Anthony and Margery Stroud.2
Marriage*12 August 1649 Mildenhall, England, See Mendenhall Family Association Newsletter Vol. 5., No.2. why wife is probably not Joane Strode daughter of William Strode and Joanna Barnard of Barrington, Somerset Co., England. The connection was original made due to a Benjamin Stroade mentioned in Thomas's will and a misinterpretation of William Strode's will which does not fit well with current knowledge about Joane. However Will of Margeriae Stroude mentions her daughter Joane Mildenhall and a son named Benjamin as well as 2 Mildenhall grandaughters., Principal=Thomas Mendenhall1,3
