I believe this John Arundell was the
son-in-law of Anthony and Margery
Stroud. He was in Shefford in Berkshire
County, which is only about 6-8 miles
southeast of Baydon, Wiltshire County.
The “Margery Stroud of Baydon,”
in this record confirms that this is the
same Margery as the Margery who wrote
her own will in Baydon 10 years later
(1678).
It is clear that this John Arundell
married a daughter of our Anthony and
Margery Stroud, because John Arundell
referred to his “father-in-law Anthony
Stroud.” But by 1678 when Margery
wrote her own will, she mentioned no
daughter with the last name of Arundell.
This is likely because by 1678 this John
Arundell had been dead ten years and
his widow was probably remarried by

This Arundell will also mentions
“uncle John Stroud,” revealing that our

Commentary on the Marriage Record of Anthony Stroude and Margery Barley
Part of this marriage record is in very poor condition. Through the valiant efforts of my researcher, however, she was able to make out both names. The big challenge was the groom’s first name. She had to use a 65x magnification lens on the reader, which made it clearer. The “ony” in Anthony was completely missing, and the “Anth” was only partially there. Therefore she had to study very closely neighboring letters in the same handwriting, and in that process of tracing the letters she was able to decipher the “Anth” in Anthony. I believe “Anth” Stroude cannot be anyone but our own Anthony Stroud.
This record is important because it 1) confirms the 1668 commission oath taken by “Margery Stroud, widow of Anthony Stroud,” 2) confirms that Anthony and Margery were married prior to the birth of our “Jone” — whose likely birth year is revealed in the following baptism record, and 3) provides for our family a brand new surname — Barley. But this surname is no big surprise, because in her 1678 will, Margery mentioned one of her two “kinsmen” as Stephen Barley., Principal=Anthony Jr Stroud1

Commentary on the John Arundell Will and Renunciation/Commission Record
I believe this John Arundell was the son-in-law of Anthony and Margery Stroud. He was in Shefford in Berkshire County, which is only about 6-8 miles southeast of Baydon, Wiltshire County. The “Margery Stroud of Baydon,” in this record confirms that this is the same Margery as the Margery who wrote her own will in Baydon 10 years later (1678). The phrase “by Margery Stroud, widow of Anthony Stroud, deceased 27 Jul 1668” reveals Margery’s husband’s name, and thus the likely father of our Joane. A baptism record to be discussed later will confirm that this Anthony Stroud was indeed the father of our Joane. The date refers not to when Anthony died, but to when Margery took her oath of commission.

It is clear that this John Arundell married a daughter of our Anthony and Margery Stroud, because John Arundell referred to his “father-in-law Anthony Stroud.” But by 1678 when Margery wrote her own will, she mentioned no daughter with the last name of Arundell. This is likely because by 1678 this John Arundell had been dead ten years and his widow was probably remarried by then — possibly either Elizabeth to a Hickman or Anne to a Talmage.

This Arundell will also mentions “uncle John Stroud,” revealing that our Anthony had a brother named John. These two brothers were executors for John Arundell’s estate. Of course, Anthony died before 1668, when his son-in-law died, leaving John Stroud as sole executor. However, instead of assuming the role as sole executor of the estate, John handed his commission to his sister-in-law, Margery. It is unknown why he did that.

Three names of John Arundell’s children — Anthony, Benjamin and John — are family names which are found among Margery’s children as well. All these common names strengthen the link between this will and Margery Stroud’s will.

To summarize what we can glean from this record: 1) Anthony Stroud is revealed as Margery’s husband and therefore our Joane’s father, 2) Anthony died between 1659-1668, and 3) Anthony
had a brother named John.

Will*1678 WILL OF MARGERIAE STROUDE, 1678 — Prerogative Court of Canterbury, Registered Wills, Vol. 357, Reeve, 1678, Vol. 2, folio 88 (#92323):

Commentary on the Margeriae Stroude Will
The strange spelling of “Margeriae” is found only in the heading of this will. But far more importantly the primary significance of this Baydon, Wiltshire County will of Margery Stroud’s is contained in the one all-important phrase — “my daughter Joane Mildenhall.” This one phrase should put to rest all notions that our Joane was the daughter of ANY Strodes in Somerset County. So we begin our research with this fact: our Joane Mildenhall’s mother was Margery Stroud.

But this will of Margery’s is important also because it reveals the full listing of Joane’s brothers and sisters. That will prove critical as we explore and link with earlier records to determine our Joane (Stroud) Mildenhall’s father, as well as her paternal grandparents. Future research may determine exactly how Stephen Barley and Benjamin Whittiatt were “my kinsmen.” Margery’s executor was her son, Thomas.
Margery had another son, Anthony. This latter name will prove to be Margery’s husband’s name also, as first revealed in the will of John Arundell and its accompanying “renunciation/commission record.”
