Note* Richard F. Denney: Lazarus is buried at West Elkton, Preble County, Ohio with his wife. Lazarus and most of his children moved to Preble County, Ohio around 1817/1818. Per Joel Denny's letter, it was around 1825. They may have made a brief stop in Wayne County, IN for a few months before moving onto Ohio. Much of the data on Lazarus and wife Susannah was established by tracking them through Elk and Quaker records in VA, NC, IN and Ohio. The data on Lazarus and his line was provided by William Denney of Vancouver, WA. This data on Lazarus may conflict with that from other sources (wrong dates have shown up in LDS records and other Family Histories appearing on the computer internet). I will stick to that data provided by William as Lazarus was William's 3rd great-grandfather and William has done extensive research to insure details are as near correct as possible and he quotes sources for every bit of information. His DOB was taken from 'Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy--Vol. V' by William Wade Hinshaw, 1946. It was calculated from his age given at the time of death so it may be off a day or two. The 1840 census for Preble County, Ohio supports his age as being 60-70 at that time. The1850 Preble County, Ohio census has his age as 71 which would yield a birth year of 1778. World Family Tree CD# 6, Tree# 2888 reflects his DOBas November 25, 1777 and the date of marriage to Mary Ballard as January 6, 1827. The 1850 Preble County Ohio census finds the family as Lazarus age 71,wife Mary age 58, Jonathon age 19, Martha Ekes age 12 and Israel Ballard age 36 born Ohio, listed as a laborer. Israel was Mary's son from her first marriage with David Ballard. It is possible that Lazarus moved from Grayson County, VA to Surry County, NC in 1812 in anger over a dispute with the local government overbuilding a fence across a public road. There was several articles recorded on this in the court and shortly after he showed up in Surry County, NC. Lazarus' 2nd wife Mary's last name may be 'OZBUN' or 'OSBORNE' . Per William Denney, it was spelled 'OZBUN' in the 'Encyclopedia of AmericanQuaker Genealogy--Vol. V' but should be 'OSBORNE'. Future researchers may encounter her name as MARY OZBUN BALLARD, the BALLARD being from a previous marriage.
ADDITIONALDATA ON CHILDREN Sons William, Jordan, and Reubin went to Preble County, Ohio about1817-1818. Shubal's 2nd marriage was to a Dorthia H. The 'H' may have been for 'HUFF' which may have been her married name from a previous marriage asshe was widow Dorthia Huff when he married her. The WFT CD 6, Tree 2888 as submitted by Guy Griffin has the death date for Rebecca as October 8, 1837, she was married on Oct 21, 1844, therefore one of these pieces of data is in error. There was a large connection of Lazarus' kin to the Jenkins family, hisson Shubal married Dorthia Jenkins and his grandson Joel married Mary and Sarah Jenkins, all daughters of William Jenkins.2

(Witness) Deed14 February 1822 Surry Co., NC, A February 14, 1822 Surry County Deed states:
'Rebeccah Denny, widow of Wm. Denny, Azariah Denni from Rebeccah Denni and others. This indenture made this 14th day of Feb in the year of our Lord 1822 between Rebeccah Denny, widow of William Denny decd (deceased) of State of NC and County of Surry and Nathan Holt and Martha his wife, Lazarus Denny and Kiziah Denny heirs in the estate of said William Denny decd of the one part and Azariah Denney, son of the said decd & the County and State aforesaid of the other part witnesses that the said widow Rebeccah Denny and the above named heirs as Legeatees Jointly and ....'.

This shows that William and Rebeccah Denny most likely had surviving children Azariah Denney, Martha (Denny) Holt, Nancy (Denny) Burcham, Sally (Denny) Key, Lazarus Denney and Keziah Denney in 1822. This is a sampling of data collected (By William Denney, their 4th great-great grandson) on the trails of William Denny. There is more of this type data in the possession of William Denney., Principal=William Denney, Principal=Rebecca Hooper2
