Note* From Margaret Hunt:
Nell McKinney was born in Greene County, Missouri, Jan 15 1873. She taught school, then in 1901 was married in Cherokee County, Kansas, to Charles W.. Stockton. He worked in the mines in Idaho, near Boise, then returned to Kansas and rented a farm in Cherokee County. Next they participated in a project in southern Arkansas, but the schools were so bad that they believed their daughter could not receive any proper education, and they returned to Kansas. Mr. Stockton was not particularly successful financially, but was well-regarded by everyone. Eventually, after his death, Nell was remarried to Oscar Rhodes, a widower living in Cherokee County. He was quite prosperous and they had a good farm. Nell became blind in her old age. She and Charles Stockton had one daughter:
1. Orpha Stockton was born in Idaho in 1902. She borrowed money from her uncle, Dr. William McKinney, to go to college, then set off to earn her way in the world. She is a strong-minded and independent woman. She was secretary for a corporation, then became a legal secretary. She married a Mr. Menches. They had a stormy marriage, and were divorced; but remained close. They live in Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan. Mr. Menches is now (1984) confined to a nursing home, and although Orpha is now nearly blind, she still attends. to his needs. They had one daughter: a. Kay Menches, who was unmarried. She was killed in an auto accident.1
