| Note* | Born in Monrovia, Indiana. He spent his boyhood in Plainfield, Indiana. Samuel and four brothers drove overland in two wagons from Indiana in 1868 to settle on the land in Columbus, Kansas. After father arrived, Isaac and Samuel went to Sedalia later for the household goods, taking with them at the time a load of pig lead from the Oronogo smelter to Sedalia. These were hard, lean years for the pioneer family, and during the winter they were often thankful for a meal of clabber milk, sorguhm molasses, and cornbread. Samuel went to Carthage in 1880 to join his brother in the brick business. He was responsible for the building of many brick buildings and homes in Carthage. After he sold his interest to Isaac, he worked for ten years as custodian of all school properties, then built and operated the Wheeler Livery Barn on Meridian Street. He sold this business to become superintendent of Carthage Special Road District, which post he held ten years. He operated a filling station at the junction of Grant and Howard, engaged in the real estate business for a time before being elected Justice of the Peace, which position he still held at his death.1 | |
