Everyone remembered Uncle Matt (Masten), though rather the generation of my cousins actually knew him or just heard of him I'm not sure. I think your Grandfather Russell must have been rather the same-I was too young to remember him, but we always heard about him. He seemed to always be a dynamic, leader type, who was sort of a family legend I had thought the one Papa talked about all the time was Matt, but I am sure now it was Preston. Matt was too old, and was prosperous and I have found him in Mo. during the period Papa would have been referring to. Squire Preston, and I am sure Masten, had been involved in all the Border violence before and during the Civil War. When I found them in Barton County right on the Border it was obvious, and Papa used to talk about all the tales they (or Preston) told him of the bushwhackings, etc. He said the uncle (Preston, I'm sure) had a pistol which he wore with notches on the handle. He was during this time (1880's) a railroad detective in Oklahoma. That fits in with the fact that I find his wife and children alone in Mo. during this time: he didn't seem to have been very prosperous either, which would account for his going off. Papa said he had been one of the fast guns that one saw in movies, except that in real life when there was trouble around the bars in Okla. the Sheriff would just go down the street to Uncle Preston's office and get him; Preston would just wait outside till the troublemaker came out and shoot 'him down-none of the face-offs. Since his military record says he was a scout I haven't any idea what that means, but suspect he spent the Civil War in guerilla warfare there in Mo. Papa had said that, but had implied all the brothers did; I find Shannon was too young, and Masten was in the cavalry; so it must have been Preston., Principal=Squire Preston Breeden1
