| Note* | Phoebe left the following will: Be it remembered that I, Phebe Mendenhall, of the County of Guilford and State of North Carolina being of sound and perfect mind and memory, do this 21st day of the 7th month in the year of our Lord 1816 make and publish this my last will and testament in manner and form following that is to say: First, I will and bequeath unto my daughter, Ruth Mendenhall, forty five acres of land it being part of a tract or lot of land which descended to me from my brother, William Rudduck, deceased, lying on the waters of Mordecai's Creek in the County aforementioned, beginning in Nathan Hunt's line four poles south of the lowest spring, the spring meant is down the branch below the present causway on the Great Road running thence west so far as to leave the house and garden lot lately created and now occupied by my daughter, Beulah Mendenhall, thence south far enough to make forty five acres by turning west to Isaac Mendenhall's line thence round my line northwest to the beginning. Second, I will and bequesth unto my daughter, Beulah Mendenhall, thirty acres of land being another part of the above and first described tract beginning in Nathan Hunt's line on the corner above described four rods south of the lower spring running from thence south with Nathan Hunt's line far enough to make thirty acres by turning west to Ruth Mendenhall's new line including the house and garden where she, Beulah, now lives. Third, I will and bequeath unto my daughter, Phebe Ricks, all the remaining part of the first above described tract of land which residue being twenty acres. And, as I have given unto my daughters that are deceased, to wit, Mary Kester and Jane Ricks all that I intended them, it is my will that their children shall not have any of my present estate. Also, my three sons, Mordecai Mendenhall, Seth Mendenhall and Enos Mendenhall having received their full portion of our estate it is my will that they nor neither of them shall not receive any part of my present estate. And lastly, I ordain and appoint my friend, Zebulon Hunt, executor to this my last will and testament in witness whereof I, the said Phebe Mendenhall, have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal the day and year above written (Signed) Phebe Mendenhall (her mark)2 | |
