Note* The family for David Ballard Denney is being built on data provided by Theda (Denney) Zimmerman. Her data was obtained from a copy of family bible data that was in possession of her aunt Theda Denney Gourley and through a trip to visit cemeteries in Appanoose County Iowa. To me there is conclusive indications that her David Ballard Denney is the son of Lazarus. As examples of evidence that this is the proper connection: David's middle name evidently came from his mother's first husband, it is odd that Lazarus would allow a child of his to be named exactly as his wife Abigail's first husband (David Ballard)! Many of Lazarus Denneys children moved to Iowa and Theda found records of death and burial therefor David and wife Abigail, plus those of his brother Jonathon and brother Reuben. David and second wife Abagail are buried at Unionville, Appanoose County, Iowa. David died of contraction of the nerves and Abagail died of pneumonia. Theda checked the Fairview and Denney Cemeteries at AppanooseCounty and could not locate their grave sites. She said that the Appanoose County death records stated he was buried at Unionville, Iowa
Notes on David from William Denney, Vancouver, WA David was condemned on 6 June, 1850 for marrying out of unity (by the Elk Monthly Meeting in Preble County, OH). He was living near the Cherry Grove Monthly Meeting at the time. Although Cherry Grove MM was located in Randolph County, IN, it appears that he and his new wife, Mary were living in Wayne County because they were found in the Green Township of Wayne County at the time of the 1850 Federal census which was taken on 17 September, 1850. He and his wife, Mary did not own any real estate at the time of the census. On 10 Aug 1850, he requested that the Cherry Grove MM treat him for marrying contrary to discipline. On 12 Oct 1850, he was condemned for his misconduct and the Elm MM was informed. He was granted a certificate from the Elk MM, Preble County, OH to the Cherry Grove Monthly Meeting, Randolph County, IN on 20 March, 1851. He received a membership certificate from the Elk MM, Preble County, Ohio to the Cherry Grove MM on 10 May, 1851. On 8 November 1851, he and his family were granted a certificate to the Salem Monthly Meeting in Winneshiek Co., Iowa. (Salem was an anti-slavery MM in Iowa.) They were received into the Salem MM on 17 Dec1851. (Note that the Quaker records have his wife as Mary at that time.) Also, they show Esther Ann (incorrect) as his daughter, instead of Hester Ann (correct). On 13 April, 1859, David B. was granted a certificate by the Winneshiek MM to Three Rivers MM. On 13 May, 1860, David V. (should be B.) was granted a certificate by Winneshiek MM to South River MM. There is also a note that daughter died 7 August, 1843? age 19 yrs, 8 Mos, 29 days; buried at Salem. If the dates are correct, she obviously could not be his daughter. On 16 May,1860, Hester Ann, Mary, and Sarah were granted a certificate to South River MM in Warren County, IA. At the time of the 1860 census, David and his second wife, Abigail were living in Warren County, IA; Washington Township; Indianola Post Office. David was working as a carpenter; value of real estate = $700; personal estate = $60. He was in the Iowa Cavalry in the Civil War. He married Mary COMER on 10 Jan 1850 in Randolph County, IN [S3]. David was condemned by the Elk MM, Preble Co, OH for marrying contrary to discipline on 6 Jun 1850. Mary COMER [S4] was born on 10 Dec 1830 in NC[S5]. Died on 4 Nov 1856 in Salem, Henry County, IA [S6]. It appears that Mary died during childbirth with Sarah. Mary was complained against for marrying contrary to discipline with a Quaker member (David B. Denney) on 8 February, 1851 by the Cherry Grove MM. It appears that Mary died in childbirth when Sarah Emaline was born.2
