| Note* | | Mahlon lived at West Elkton, Ohio, Carrolton, MO, Greencastle, IN,Danville, IN, and then on to Lewis, Kansas where he lived out his life asa farmer Lived in Lewis, Kansas, Guy Denney was in contact with him in 1912 & hewas 70 years old. He stated that he had a family genealogy that was lostwhen he crossed the Mississippi River. In the 1860 Preble County, Ohio census, Mahlon was listed as head of thehousehold of his mothers farm, evidently running the farm for hismother. Mary's (his mother) son by her previous marriage, IsraelBallard, was living with them. Note that Mahlon married a Ballard! Theremay have been some kissin cousin marriage here. During the Civil War, he joined the Union Army enlisting at age 30 inCompany I, 11th Ohio Infantry. He mustered in August 16, 1862 at Dayton,Ohio with a bounty of $25 paid and premium paid was $4.00. In the Springof 1863 Mahlon slipped and fell while carrying a heavy box of meatproducing thereby a rupture or a scrota hernia. On the 22nd day ofSeptember, 1863 near Chattanooga, TN, while engaging in a skirmish orbattle with the rebels, Mahlon received a violent concussion of the lefthip and spine by the passage of a shell by which he was knocked down,having his head injured at the same time by a fragment of a shell, theeffects of these wounds producing much anguish. As a result of thesewounds, he later in life was very lame and could walk only with his toeson the ground and with his heels elevated three or four inches and couldnot walk without the aid of a cane. He was given a disability dischargeDec 12, 1863 because of injuries occurred at Chattanooga, TN. After the war, Mahlon hired an Attorney to represent him in pursuing aninvalid pension, this endeavor was carried on for many years, up throughthe 1900s. He was living at Franklin Township of Edwards County, KS at the time ofthe 1900 Kansas census. His stepson, Aleck H. Dugger was living with themat the time. The data on his wife Rebecca was obtained from WFT CD #1, Tree# 1036.This is a very large tree with many COONS/COANS if other researchers wantto look at this line. Per Denny French, the name on his tombstone was shown as DENNY. He waslaid to rest at the Wayne Cemetery, Lewis, Kansas His wife Lucinda was apparently married previously and her maiden namewas not DUGGER, she brought a son to her marriage with Mahlon by the nameof Hiram A. Dugger FACTS FROMHIS WILL He left all of his real property to his wife Lucinda, it consisted of asizeable amount of property in and surrounding, Lewis, Kansas. Upon thedeath of his wife, all property was to be sold by the executor of hiswill and the money divided to his heirs as follows: 1/5 to son LeonardDenney of Selma, IN, 1/5 to son William B Denney of LaGrange, Oregon, 1/5to son Harvey Denney of Middleville, MI, and 1/5 to daughter Mary AnnKepler of Columbus, Ohio. His step-son H. A. Dugger of Lewis, Kansas wasappointed as the executor of his will. A supplement was issued on Dec 14,1921 which shows that two of his heirs, sons William and Leonard precededhim in death, thus the heirs of those two were entitled to 1/20 shares ofMahlon's estate. $300 was given to each grandchild, Homer Denney, OllieDenney, William E Denney, Charles Denney (children of William B Denney)and William H Denney, Hannah Denney, G. Clifford Denney, Oaka C Wier(Children of Leonard Denney).2 |
