Oliver Sloan Will: ..."I give and devise to my beloved wife in lieu of her dower, the farm on which we now reside situate in the Township of Lodi, County of Athens and State of Ohio, containing about Eighty Acres during her natural life, ...(etc.) At the death of my said wife it is my will that the real estate aforesaid be sold and the proceeds divided as follows: to my son Edwin D. Sloan $100.--; to my son John S. Sloan $ 5.--; to my daughter Eliza J. Hawk $50..--; to my son Truman B. Sloan $5.--; to my son Oliver A. Sloan $ 300.--; to my daughter Lucy A. Daines $200.--; to my daughter Emma P. Sloan $500.--; to my grand Son Eugen L. Sanborn $500.--; to my son Charles M. Sloan $ 1. The residue after paying all funeral expences and debts, to be divided as follows: to my son Edwin D. Sloan, and one half to my daughter Emma P. Sloan. Portion there of: " She (Marilla) and grandpa Sloane had three children.
First Uncle Allen the model young man of the neighborhood. Second, Lucy
Vinacia of whom I know nothing. And last Emma, the youngest, the spoiled,
the black sheep of the family. Emma was impossible! She could and did stand
up on a horeses back and ride it at a gallop around a field. She could and
did go barefooted when she was entirely too old for such nonsense. She
never had but one child Eugene Sanborne, who instead of becoming a
delinquent as his in-laws expected became a successful Chicago businessman
and a good Christian. Grandfather Sloane left his youngest grandson Eugene
$ 500 when he died...
